McLaren MP4-12c

A modelled and rendered replica

The body kit of the McLaren MP4-12c was surfaced modelled, starting in Autodesk Inventor and finishing in Solidworks. It was then imported into Keyshot where it was rendered and animated.

METHOD

Once I decided that I was going to model a McLaren I researched into the best way to accurately replicate it. After some YouTube videos. I found using a cross sectioned sketch picture was the best way. Once the pictures were set up, I cross referenced the edges of each body panel and sketched the same edge on two planes. combining these sketches to make one 3D sketch. I repeated this until I had one complete panel and it could be surfaced patched (Inventor) or surfaced filled (Solidworks). this was done for each panel and then thickened.

RENDERING

Once the CAD model was completed, it was imported into Keyshot for rendering and animations. material pairing was done first, this is so that materials can be easily changed and re-changed. Materials were added using the material graph to get the materials I wanted. Decals such as licence plates were added as a label. By editing the HDRI of the environment I could control the placement of the shine on the McLaren. Animated with Keyshots Animation Wizard to produce movement where wanted.
