ANIMATION SHORT

An on going project to make a 6 minute animation, where everything is created by me, modelling on Solidworks and Autodesk Inventor, animated on Autodesk Maya and Keyshot, rendered on Keyshot, and edited together on Adobe Premiere Pro, with post production done frame by frame on Adobe Photoshop.

STORYBOARDING

A story was the first task in making my animation short. I sketched out the story scene by scene and some of the characters. this gave me a plan but it was a plan that was able to change if needed. I know sketching is my area of weakness.

MODELLING

Since I have been doing CAD for 10 years, I had a bank of models that I could use to populate the room. I modelled the needed models crossing software's to get the best results, such as the sofa being started in Solidworks and finished in Maya to create the needed bumps in the soft material. Characters I rigged in Maya to give the movement I wanted for my story.

ANIMATING

Animations were mainly produced in Maya. I studied the actual movement of the thing in real life and made the keyframes that controlled the animation. an example of this was watching my brother recite the lines I chosen the robot to say and studying his mouth and how it moved and at each extreme so fully open or fully closed mouth dipped into a new position, I would put a keyframe. I also pay attention to the squash and stretch process of a ball.

RENDERING

With help from a plug-in, Maya animations were imported into Keyshot object by object. this meant that cameras and colour changing animations were done within Keyshot. Each material graph to get the look I wanted. The whole room was modelled and lights added to the outside to make the effect of sun coming through the window. Once everything was in place each seen was individually rendered.

EDITING

The scene were cut together with premiere Pro. This was the first chance I got to see the animation, and see what was missing. I went back and forth rending new sections until I was happy with how it was progressing through the story I had planned. I made the music on an online piano and cut that over the top of video.

POST PRODUCTION

In KeyShot 7 hotspots are a problem in enclosed spaces and areas of high levels of light, they would move frame to frame but are on most frames so when this occurred i would cut the frame out of the sequence, then edit them out in Photoshop and place it back in.
